'Chakra' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'wheel of light'. Sanskrit is one of the world's most ancient languages originating in India. "The chakras are invisible energy patterns in the body where a healer can place his, or her hands to bring about a positive change in energy function to the whole being". THE CHAKRA SYSTEM In healing, the chakras of the patient are of central importance as the healer works over the body. There are seven major chakras and many minor less important ones, all of which are the energy centres, or energy junctions of the body. These seven energy processing centres are our energetic connections to the realms of pure consciousness and spiritual essence. The way in which they operate makes every aspect of our body, mind, emotional and spiritual life possible. With each of the seven major chakras there is an associated colour that is unique to each one. Number | Name/Location | Character | True Color | 7 | Crown of Head | Totality of Beingness, Spiritual Perfection. | Violet | 6 | Forehead (3rd Eye) | Visualization, Psychic Sight. | Indigo | 5 | Throat | Communication and Creative Expression. | Blue | 4 | Heart | Universal Love, Compassion, Empathy. | Green | 3 | Solar Plexus | Creation of Self. Perception and Projection of Self. | Yellow | 2 | Sacral | Desire, Including Sexual Energy. | Orange | 1 | Base of Spine | Physical Vitality, Grounding, Survival. | Red |
Each of these major chakras, or primary energy centres, is unique in character and corresponds to every aspect of our being. Shaped something like a cone they are whirlpools of energy with their vortices lying inside the body along the spinal chord, corresponding to a central energy channel up into the head. Any blockage or other energetic dysfunction in the chakras will almost certainly bring disorders in the Body, Mind and Spirit. Any such defect in the energy flow of a chakra will result in disruption of the provision of energy to certain parts of the physical body, as well as interuptions in the whole energy field's ability to process energy, undoubtedly affecting all levels of the being. Each part of the energy field works as a whole therefore any breakdown affects every other part. The front of the body is where the more dominant features of the middle five chakras are found and the back the less dominant. The seventh and first chakra are generally thought of as having the one dominant feature as their counterparts are of far less importance. The seventh, or crown chakra projects upwards above the head and is often depicted as a lotus flower with its petals open representing spiritual awakening. The opening in the crown chakra, located in the same area as the soft spot on a baby's head, serves as an entry where the Universal Life Force can enter our bodies and disperse downward into the lower six chakras below it. The crown chakra, is associated with the colour violet and when functioning optimally, allows inner communications with our spiritual nature to take place. The first chakra extends forwards from the base of the spine, and downwards, at roughly a 45 degree angle, although its exact position will vary in each individual.
