Sitting around a table holding hands usually with a medium present and asking questions like, 'is there anybody there?' is a seance and nothing to do with a learning circle of any kind.
A 'development circle' does not have to be strictly speaking, in a circle. It certainly should not be conducted in a darkened room by candlelight alone. A well-lit, happy and comfortable environment is just perfect!
Most Spiritualist Churches teach people who are interested in mediumship, or who may be keen in developing any prospective skills via a learning circle and then, by progressing to a closed circle for the finishing touches.
Our Learning Circle is open to anybody wishing to either learn the basics or just simply sit-in and enjoy the peace, quiet and comfortable ambience.
The Closed Circle is only for the more advanced who have progressed to a required level in a Learning Circle.

There are many different forms of *mediumship, the three most well known types are;
Clairvoyant, the ability to see spirit and positive energies.
Clairaudient, allowing the medium to hear spirit.
Clairsentient, the ability to feel. or sense spirit around you.
As a novice sitting in a learning circle for the first time and without any prior feelings for any of the above there is no guarantee whatsoever which you are likely to eventually be. It could be that you may develop any one of these, or be really lucky and have all three. Ultimately it is for Spirit to decide what you do and how you do it.
A properly organised circle will teach you protection, grounding, how to open up and close down and much more. It is also most important that any development circle is properly supervised at all times.
